La Bastide at Saugé
Why not enjoy a holiday or short break in the Poitou Charente, a delightful region of western France?
Saugé is a substantial 19th century maison de maître with 16th century origins set around a courtyard on a site which has been occupied since Roman times. La Bastide, the gîte, offers comfortable and well-equipped accommodation for 4 or 5 people in a peaceful setting with a sunny terrace and garden overlooking the historic and picturesque village of Sanxay. There is also a chambre d’hôte in the main house if you wish to sleep a further two people.
The village is conveniently situated midway between Poitiers and Niort nestling in the valley of the River Vonne surrounded by gently rolling countryside. In the village, a short walk away, you will find two grocery shops, a post office, boulangerie, bar and hairdresser. By the river is an olympic size open air swimming pool with a separate childrens’ pool and play area, here you can also hire pedalos or go fishing. There are, of course, a range of good restaurants within easy reach.
La Bastide is a good base from which to visit the nearby Gallo-Roman site, the prehistoric necropolis at Bougon or historic Poitiers. The Marais Poitevin (“Green Venice”), the multimedia centre at Futuroscope and the Atlantic coast at La Rochelle and the Ile de Ré are all easily accessible and other activities in the area include golf, walking, cycling, birdwatching, canoeing, go-karting and horse-riding.
